The radiology division at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) is one of the largest pediatric radiology services in the country. While based at the hospital’s main campus in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, the department also provides neonatal radiology services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and general radiology services at North, East, and South CHP satellite locations. Subspecialty-trained pediatric radiologists, who also comprise the Pediatric Radiology Division conduct more than 130,000 procedures annually, including MR, CT, X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and interventional procedures.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is equipped with four ultrasound units, two radiographic and fluoroscopy units, one interventional radiology suite, and five radiology rooms. UPMC Presbyterian, which is adjacent to CHP, provides CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine services. In 2009, CHP will move into a new, state-of-the-art, 263-bed hospital in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. In addition to the hospital, the new facility will house a research complex, ambulatory care center and faculty and administrative office space.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 children's hospitals in the country by U.S. News and World Report and is the only hospital in western Pennsylvania devoted solely to the care of infants, children and young adults. Learn more at www.chp.edu.

The Eye & Ear Institute, located in the academic hub of Oakland, is one of the few centers in the nation dedicated entirely to the management of problems related to otolaryngology and ophthalmology. Conditions treated include sino-nasal disorders, balance disorders and head and neck cancer. Radiology needs are covered by the Neuroradiology Division, based at UPMC Presbyterian. Director of Head and Neck Imaging Barton F. Branstetter, IV, MD leads the subspecialty-trained radiologists who utilize specialized diagnostics, such as sialography and modified barium studies to diagnose these conditions. The head and neck imaging section is also a recognized leader in both clinical and research applications of PET/CT in head and neck cancer. Dr. Branstetter and colleagues are active in the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology and publish and present extensively on topics related to the field. The Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC, located adjacent to UPMC Shadyside, functions as the UPMC’s cancer care hub and is one of the largest integrated networks of cancer physicians and health care specialists in the country. Directors of oncologic and breast imaging lead Hillman Cancer Center’s radiology services. Radiologists in various other subspecialties also rotate at this facility, and share radiology equipment resources with UPMC Shadyside. At the Hillman site, a dedicated 64-slice PET/CT and two fully-equipped PET/CT workstations are available, and the department continues to expand its PET/CT service, offering unified reports from physicians who are boarded in both nuclear medicine and radiology. In addition to cancer diagnosis and staging with PET/CT, radiology faculty are involved in a number of cutting-edge research projects to evaluate the effectiveness of early stage cancer therapies, especially in breast and colorectal cancers. Faculty are also engaged in investigating new hybrid imaging techniques, such as PET/MR/optical imaging.

Plans are underway to build a new cancer research building, which will add additional imaging facilities at Hillman. State-of-the-art PACS and teleconferencing allow radiologists to interact with colleagues at the Oakland sites, and participate in resident noon conferences and other training activities. Magee-Womens Hospital radiology has always been on the cutting edge in women’s imaging, and is home to some of the most renowned women’s imaging specialists in the nation. Magee-Womens was the first hospital in the United States to install a digital mammography system in 2000 and one of the first to perform MRI-guided, vacuum–assisted biopsies in 2005. In 2006, the hospital completed its conversion to digital mammography, and is now one of the largest digital mammography centers in the country. In addition to mammography, notable procedures provided at this site include sonography, ultrasound- and stereotactic-guided breast biopsy, needle localization, ductography, breast MRI, PET/CT, uterine artery embolization, breast biopsy using radiofrequency, and vacuum-assisted breast biopsy. The Women’s Imaging Division who staff Magee-Womens are involved in several research projects to evaluate the utility of computer-aided detection (CAD) and novel imaging techninques, such as tomosynthesis.

Radiologists rely upon teleradiology to read mammography images captured at Magee-Womens Hospital’s six affiliated Womancare Centers in the Pittsburgh metro area. Magee-Womens Hospital, one of the nation’s leading hospitals devoted exclusively to the care of women and infants, has been serving the population of Pittsburgh since 1911. Today, the historic South Side of Pittsburgh has transformed itself from an industrial area into one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, including boutiques, live music venues, loft apartments and sidewalk cafes.

In addition, the South Side area contains other UPMC facilities including the Roesch-Taylor Medical Building, an office location of numerous primary care physicians and specialists, and UPMC South Pittsburgh, a community health center which is a cooperative effort with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Health Department.  This center also includes a Magee-Womens Hospital neighborhood health center, which offers obstetric and gynecologic care to women, as well as pregnancy care, family planning, teen health care, and health information and education.
