Musculoskeletal Imaging Division

Musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging is integral to the care of trauma patients, athletes at all levels of skill, patients with arthritis, total joint replacements and back pain as well as those with bone and soft tissue tumors. The UPMC MSK Division provides consultative service for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the athletic teams of the University of Pittsburgh as well as local colleges and high schools.

The MSK Division delivers outstanding interpretative services for MRI, CT and radiographic studies. Additionally, the Division provides services in MSK ultrasound, diagnostic and therapeutic joint injections, and superficial and deep bone and soft tissue biopsies.

The MSK faculty is actively involved in cutting edge research in MSK imaging and clinical outcomes studies. Clinical and research relationships with other departments, including the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Plastic Surgery, and the Division of Rheumatology, create a dynamic and robust research environment. Multidisciplinary conferences broaden the learning and teaching experience for our trainees and faculty.

The MSK Division is staffed with 4 MSK fellowship-trained radiologists. One to two MSK imaging fellows and at least 50 radiology residents are trained yearly with the faculty teaching the entire spectrum of MSK imaging topics. Specifically, trainees are exposed to basic and advanced diagnostic modalities and techniques including radiography, CT, MRI, and ultrasound and they gain experience performing image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Visiting residents and fellows also frequently rotate through MSK Division. MSK Division members also have leadership positions in several national and international forums, including the Society of Skeletal Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society.

The MSK Division provides care to patients at multiple locations including: UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, UPMC Montefiore Hospital, Kaufman outpatient clinics, UPMC Shadyside Hospital, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, UPMC Magee Womens Hospital, as well as several outpatient clinics in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area.
